    I think generally….
    trance: softer, longer more complicated loops
    eg. Everybody In The Place – The Prodigy

    techno: pump up, short loops, sharp/melodic notes
    eg. Tune up! – Ravers Fantasy

    Techno has a 4/4-beat meter while Trance has a 16- or 32-beat meter. At the end of these meters, you’ll typically hear a changeup. Each quarter of a meter in techno will typically sound the same; while with trance, the melody will change. Trance is more melodic and the longer beats also give it a softer feel than techno. Also, techno has a faster beat-per-minute(BPM) than trance; 140-160 BPM for techno and 110-140 for trance. I’ll give you some examples.

    –== TRANCE ==–

    New Order – Waiting For The Sirens Call (Planet Funk RMX)

    If you count the beats from the start of the song, you’ll notice the change-ups that occur every 32nd beat.

    S.U.N. Project – Drosophilia

    Here’s a Goa Trance track that also has a 32-beat meter. When the beat starts, you can count along to 32 and hear the change-up that occurs.

    –== TECHNO ==–

    DK8 – Murder Was The Bass

    Techno tends to be a lot more minimalistic than Trance relying on more “simple” sounds.

    Luke Slater @ I Love Techno 2003

    Once again, the sound is more minimalistic and consistent over the short meter.

    –== HOUSE ==–

    Furry Phreaks ft. Terra Deva – All Over The World

    This has the similar 4-beat meter to techno, however you’ll notice that it has a much slower BPM than techno.

    Kings of Tomorrow – Finally (Original Mix)

    Similar in style to the previous song except this has a more soulful vocal track.

    There are several more major genres of electronic dance music, each with their own sub-genres. If you want to know more about the different genres and sub-genres, just ask.
